This is my final post for my Author Love series. Hopefully I'll be able to do it again sometime, with new-to-me authors to feature! :)

In case you missed it last week, I'm going to show some author love on this blog. To find out more, see my original post. :)

I've decided to do a series of posts about these amazing authors (in no particular order), one a week until I'm done, starting, well, today. :) To give each their due. I want highlight them for how much I love them. So share with me, love with me... feel free to post with me! :)

This week's featured author is:

Elizabeth Wein. Seriously. Did you read Code Name Verity? Do I need to elaborate? I jumped at the chance to read her next book, Rose Under Fire, and loved it just as much, for different reasons. I am super excited to read more from this author. I feel so connected to her characters. I *still* think about them. Still. I'm not a history buff, and in the past I've shied away from historical fiction. But these... these are amazing. She writes so beautifully. And everything in the books seems plausible, real. I am so glad I discovered her.

Recommended Reads {A Top Ten Tuesday Post}

I have no problem recommending books... sort of. I mean, I will recommend stuff all the time, to Malissa, Mindy, Danielle... but there's always the nagging thought...

Yes, I realize that it's better if we all have varied opinions, that what works for one may not work with another. But, and I know you feel me here, when it's something we absolutely loved, that touched us on some deeper level, we want that person we're recommending it to to grasp the awesomeness that is that book as well. Right? But, alas, that doesn't always happen. Such is life. Plus, it'd be pretty damn boring if we all liked the same stuff, right?

All that being said, to my sister-in-law (one of the slowest readers I've ever met, so the book has to be quick/easy to get into...) I would recommend the following:

        
     
        

I've loved each of these at one time or another. And definitely could see (or maybe just hope) that Michelle would love them just as much. :)

Rose Under Fire: A Review

I was super excited when my best friend decided to order this from the Book Depository because she wanted to read it sooner than the US pub date - and even more excited when she said I could borrow it. After reading Code Name Verity (you can see my review here if you're interested) I must admit I was little scared, in a good way, of Elizabeth Wein, being how she shattered my heart into a zillion pieces and proceeded to tap dance on said pieces.

Rose is an American pilot working with Allied forces during WWII. As we know from the description, she ends up captured and imprisoned in a concentration camp. The story that follows is one of heartbreak, unimaginable pain, friendship, and hope.

I know it's going to happen, but to compare Rose Under Fire to Code Name Verity is like comparing apples to oranges. Yes, they are both war stories and feature strong women who are pilots. But that's where the similarities end, really. Rose has her own story to tell, her own horrors and suffering to convey.  And Wein does a great job of conveying them. Rose's desperation and fear leaped off the page and into my heart. I cried for her, I cheered for her, but most of all, I hoped for her.

Rose makes friends inside the walls of the concentration camp. They rally together to support and help one another in a time when all hope seems lost. The bond these women create are the types of bonds I strive to have with my closest friends. They are willing to die for one another, to give up food or shelter. They do everything they can to help one another survive.

Wein's writing is amazing. I had no trouble at all imagining the world she was creating within these pages. It was a bleak time, dark and dreary, and I felt all that while I was reading. She attacked all my senses as I flipped page by page, engulfing me in a horrible time of our history.

I very much look forward to reading more by Elizabeth Wein in the future.

Rose Under Fire: A Review by Malissa

Rose Justice is a young American ATA pilot, delivering planes and taxiing pilots for the RAF in the UK during the summer of 1944. A budding poet who feels most alive while flying, she discovers that not all battles are fought in the air. An unforgettable journey from innocence to experience from the author of the best-selling, multi-award-nominated Code Name Verity. From the exhilaration of being the youngest pilot in the British air transport auxiliary, to the aftermath of surviving the notorious Ravensbruck women's concentration camp, Rose's story is one of courage in the face of adversity. Code Name Verity is shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

My Thoughts

So this is it. Companion/follow-up to Code Name Verity, hands down one of the best books I've ever read (see my review of that book here if you're interested http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...). I had to have this book shipped from overseas and deal with a shipping snafu with the first copy they sent to get it before the Sept 10 publication date here in the U.S. So was it worth it? In short, yes. Despite a similar protagonist, similar setting and similar narrative style, this is a different book than Verity. That book was, if I were going to try and oversimplify it, a book about friendship filled with twists and turns that made you gasp and and flip back to see what you missed and how. This one is a survival story and a bit more straightforward in terms of knowing what's going on. And while I LOVED (yes, caps and italics are necessary) Verity, I'm glad this book was different because it's a different story. 

We know going into this one (unless you didn't read the jacket flap or publishers description in various locations) that Rose, an American ATA pilot, is going to end up captured by the Nazis and be sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. And most of us have read concentration camp stories before. At least there are plenty out there for the reading. I've read many, most of the "big" ones both fiction and nonfiction. Still this book stands out for me because Elizabeth Wein's characters just come alive on the page. Her characters live and breathe and cry and sometimes stop breathing and it hurts when they do. It really hurts. Because of the way it's told (the largest part of the story written after the fact by Rose) we know the outcome to some extent but not the details. And the story is in the details. In the friendships and small acts of rebellion and little acts of faith and hope that keep Rose and her fellow women prisoners alive during their time at Ravensbrück. And it's in the outcome for various characters both those who survive and those who don't. It's in the humanity and incredible way people can keep fighting even when faced with the worst that other humans can possibly do to them. I read this book in about two days, and not weekend or vacation-type days, because I couldn't stop turning pages. 

I will say that this book didn't affect me quit as much as did Code Name Verity but I think that's largely because I was prepared this time. I knew what Elizabeth Wein can do to the hearts of her readers going in to this one. And a part of me kept waiting for the other shoe to drop or the rug to be pulled out from under me with a big twist I hadn't seen coming but it didn't and wasn't. Because this is a different story, as I said. 

There are connections to Verity in this book, so I'd recommend reading them in publication order if you're wanting to read both. And while I'm glad for those connection because we get to see the followup events to that book to and extent, to see how people are doing after, they actually weren't my favorite parts because this is Rose's story now. And I think that speaks to the author's skill that I found myself wanting to go forward with this story not go back to that one. 

Definitely a recommended read both for those who loved the author's previous book(s) and those who didn't and a book that will live on my shelf permanently (the U.S. hardcover edition is already preordered). It would also make a great book club selection.

WWW Wednesday

Hey y'all! I inadvertently took a nearly week long break from blogging. I took a mini-vacay to visit Malissa and didn't schedule any posts. :(

But, on a happy note, I had a great time visiting. We did yoga, pedis, and some shopping. I did go to a used bookstore with her and I traded in a bag full of books for store credit and got nearly $100 worth of books for only $30.  Needless to say I was uber excited. I was going to take pictures of them before I shelved them but, alas, I forgot.

Currently Reading

This came out in June in Britain and Malissa wanted it badly enough to order it (she sent me her review which I'll post soon...). She's letting me borrow it. We both LOVED Code Name Verity and I'm excited I'm able to read this now. 

Recently Finished

   

I finished Revolution as part of the ReReadathon. I am happy to say I loved it as much this time as I did last time. I also finished Uncommon Criminals and I'm looking forward to getting Perfect Scoundrels through my library.

  ♥ Top Ten Most Intimidating Books ♥

What makes a book intimidating? It could be size... I mean, have you seen some of the monstrosities out there? It could be the raving lunatics. We've all been there. *We* loved a book so we go on and on about how great it is. That filters out to the rest of the world, and, oops ~ we've scared people off. What if I don't love it like all of these people? Is something wrong with me? ;) Of course not, but that doesn't mean I won't shy away from it if everyone seems to be all about it. Or, what if it's a series and I'm afraid of how it will continue/end? Or a book by an author I love and I'm afraid I won't love it as much?  And classics? Don't even get me started on those. C'mon... great literary works are supposed to be adored by all, right? So, what books am I intimidated by?

Shiver - I have loved/enjoyed every Maggie Stiefvater book I have read. What if I don't this one?
Jane Eyre - I'm supposed to be reading this for a discussion with two friends, and I'm shying away from it. It's a classic, that's what I do.
Rose Under Fire - I LOVED LOVED LOVED Code Name Verity. What if this doesn't live up?
17 & Gone - An author I really like raved about this one. I bought it. Now it sits. ;)
Gone Girl - Came highly recommended by a friend; what if I don't like it?
To Kill A Mockingbird - Need I say more?
Jane Austen (in general) - I've never *gasp* read a Jane Austen novel. Classics just scare me, I think.

Top Ten Rewind!

  ♥ Top Ten Books I Want to Reread ♥

Okay, so when I went through the list of previous Top Ten's, I narrowed it down to two. This one, Books I Want to Reread, and another one, Books I Wish I Read as a Kid. As hard as I thought on it, I could not come up with ten books I wish I had read as a kid. Unless I broke it down and named all the titles of an author, which I felt was cheating (such as Roald Dahl... man I wish I had let my kid-self experience that magic). But, alas, coming up with ten titles, well, authors, at least, didn't work for me. I got to six before my head wanted to explode with annoyance. So, I went with the rereads. I do feel as if this one is too easy of one, though, as I easily came up with fifteen. Fifteen. My apologies for taking an easy way out, but I did narrow it down to ten. That part was hard. ;)

 

The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff

I love all three of Brenna's books, but this was my favorite. I would love to revisit this world and her writing.

Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult

This was the first book I ever read by Jodi. I want to reread it to remember why I fell in love with her in the first place. (I still like her, just want to revisit that first one.)

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

It's The Fault in Our Stars, do I really need a reason? ♥

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

I know there has been a lot of mixed reviews on Requiem, but I personally really liked it. I would love to go back to the beginning and remember and relearn all those things I had forgotten.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I've already read this series three times. But I will definitely revisit it before Catching Fire is released (well, before I actually watch it, at least). And, if it's like the last time, I'll reread it again after I've seen the movie. (I was immersed in Hunger Games for nearly a month when the first movie came out... books, movie, books again.)

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

This was my first introduction to Maggie Stiefvater and her brilliance. I love her writing and this world fascinated and surprised me. I want to go back and see my friends. 

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

See above, minus it being my first introduction. :)

Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

I read this one what seems like forever ago. I want to remember the world, the lives, and why I loved it. 

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Although I know I will cry, once again, and be emotionally wrecked by the end, I still want to revisit this one. The shock factor will be elusive, but I can't imagine it being any less painful.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

This book was so much fun and I fell in love with the characters and their adventure. I definitely want to reread this one; maybe next winter? Hmm...

To Buy or Not to Buy?

♥ Top Ten Authors I'd Auto-Buy ♥
As I'm sure I'm in the same boat as most of you, I love buying books. I love the new book smell, I love the idea of having a book that I loved on my shelf to visit again and again if I want. I also love the excitement that comes with a book I haven't read. Sometimes I'm okay not buying them, other times, when it comes to a particular author, I have no qualms buying them, mostly without even knowing what they are even about. Some authors I trust that much. Who are they?

In no particular order...

Maggie Stiefvater

The wonderful Maggie Stiefvater. I love her writing, her stories. Despite the fact that it makes me a little scared to read the ones I haven't read (what if by chance I don't love them as much as previous ones???  How could I survive it!?!?), I will buy them and have no regrets. Why? I realize that I'm a drop in the bucket when it comes to sales. That she'll most likely never know just how much I love her books and recommend them left and right. But I want to continue to support her and encourage her writing by doing what I can do. Plus, I want to live in her books. That's enough for me.

Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult is, I am pretty sure, the first author whose books I ever fell in love with. I have yet to read a disappointing one. I started with Vanishing Acts and made my way through all of them, the last one being when I was pregnant with my first child. That would have been... Handle with Care. After so many heart wrenching and emotional roller coasters, I did need a break from the stories for a bit, but I have still bought all but the last one (Lone Wolf). I will definitely be reading them sometime.

John Green

Oh, John Green, my fellow Hoosier. Such an amazing writer... he could write about golf and I would probably still read it. Because you probably don't know, my husband *loves* golf and I find it quite boring... to watch on tv or live. I don't think he can do any wrong.

David Levithan & Rachel Cohn

 Anyone who wrote Dash & Lily's Book of Dares deserves a spot on my auto-buy list. I do have Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist on my shelf, which I will read eventually, and I definitely will not turn down any chances to buy more. 

Sarah Dessen

Ah, the amazing Sarah Dessen. I love her take on life, love, relationships. When I first started reading her books years ago, I told my mom that she reminded me Jodi Picoult, just without the heavier issues that Jodi deals with. However, this is not true. She deserves a category all her own. So she gets it from me. And she also gets a spot on my auto-buy list. ;)

Elizabeth Wein

 

She wrote Code Name Verity... need I say more? I mean, as much as I loved it, as much as I breathed it, I want more of her. I think I could buy them with no regrets.

Lauren Oliver

Such wonderful writing... I get so lost in her books that I can't imagine my home without them on my shelf. 

Brenna Yovanoff

I'll admit, I may just buy these for the covers. Seriously, have you seen them? I own all three of them... well, one is in eBook format, so I still need to the hardcover edition... and I will continue to buy them until I tire of it. I don't see that happening though. I love the Gothic sense I get from the covers that matches perfectly with the feel in the books. I am so curious what she'll come up with next. (And I love that they have all been standalone novels so far).

She has one other book, I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, that I look forward to reading. And as soon as I can get it I will definitely be adding it to my shelf. I'm not even sure what it's about. The author of Revolution, another of my all-time favorite books. I figure if an author can sway me in my aversion to historical fiction then she must be good and worthy of owning her books. I will definitely be adding more of her to my shelf at home.  

Whew! That took some work. ;) Not really, but I did have to think hard... and I almost didn't do ten of them this week. But here they are.
