Keeping the Moon {A Review}

Keeping the MoonTitle: Keeping the Moon
Author: Sarah Dessen
Publisher: Speak
Publication Date: September 1999
Source: Own
Rating: 3 stars

The Scoop from Goodreads:

Colie expects the worst when she's sent to spend the summer with her eccentric aunt Mira while her mother, queen of the television infomercial, tours Europe. Always an outcast -- first for being fat and then for being "easy" -- Colie has no friends at home and doesn't expect to find any in Colby, North Carolina. But then she lands a job at the Last Chance Cafe and meets fellow waitresses Morgan and Isabel, best friends with a loving yet volatile relationship. Wacky yet wise, Morgan and Isabel help Colie see herself in a new way and realize the potential that has been there all along

I found this in my drafts. Wrote it when I read the book back in October, just never completed the actual post. So... yeah... here ya go. :)

So I was looking for something to read over the weekend. Ever since I finished Blue Lily, Lily Blue, I've had a hard time with finding something I liked. I read, and disliked, Gone Girl (feel free to throw things at me... and it wasn't just the ending I didn't like). I tried to get into Girl of Fire & Thorns, but just couldn't. I read a good portion and realized I just wasn't that into it. Some day I may revisit it. I tried Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, and found myself just simply not caring. I thought it was strange and uninteresting. I tried a few pages of a few other books, but nothing was grabbing my attention. As I was browsing my bookshelf, I realized I had a Sarah Dessen book on there I hadn't read. I thought "I can always get into these, no problem." So I picked it up.

And I did enjoy it. I really like Dessen's writing. It's simple and beautiful. And, for the most part, I really liked the characters in this one. Let's start with Colie (actually, it's Nicole. Sparks. Nicole Sparks. I wonder if that similarity was done on purpose?). She's a lost soul. Truly. Once she and her mom finally settled down in some place, her mom and her both lost weight. But while her mom went on to be a successful weight loss-related product spokesperson, Colie is left feeling alone and broken. She's only ever had people be mean to her and she doesn't know how to cope/deal/let go of it all and just be herself. She is sent to live with her eccentric Aunt Mira in Colby. She meets Norman, who is a collector of all things with which he uses for his artistic creations. He's also a painter and a really sweet guy. She also becomes friends with her neighbors and coworkers (she gets a job at a restaurant where Norman is a cook and these two gals are waitresses), Morgan and Isabel. Morgan is a peacemaking, trustful person, while Isabel is a straightforward, tell-it-as-it-is type person.

So, there's a brief description of the main characters. There's no major drama, just your typical run-of-the-mill type things. But there's a lot of self-discovery and realizing what's important and what's not. And while all of those things are done well, there were a few hiccups for me with this one.

One: The Fat Years. Maybe it's my own sensitivity, but Colie loses 45 pounds. And I'm by no means saying that being 45 pounds overweight is a good thing. It can wreak havoc on your health. But, calling it "The Fat Years"? I don't know. For some reason that phrase just made me cringe... every time I read it. Every. Single. Time.

Two: Preachiness. There's always a lesson in a Sarah Dessen book. Always. But I just feel like this one was a little preachy in that sense. Not-so-subtle. I like subtle when reading a novel when it comes to lessons. So Mira had a conversation with Colie and it was obvious she was specifically trying to point things out to her to help her along. And same with other characters. Not that these things didn't need to be said, I just felt like it was a bit too "out there." Make sense? (In all fairness, I think Dessen has improved on this tremendously throughout her writing...)

Three: Cluelessness. There was quite a bit of it. Mostly on the part of Colie. This is VERY minor and has no bearing on how I feel about the book as a whole, tho. Just something I wanted to point out. I'm sure I was pretty clueless at that age as well, but dang. Sometimes I wanted to reach through the pages and just spell it out for her. (That goes against how I feel above, tho, doesn't it?)

All in all I really enjoyed this one. Mostly it was the second hiccup. It just took me out of the story more than I'd like. Keeping in mind it's one of her earlier works, I will still get excited over new ones she has comes out. Like Saint Anything. (Out May of this year... woot-woot!)

Books & Authors Significant in My Reading Journey {A Top Ten Post}

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a Top Ten topic for you to create your list, then you share it on their post so others can find you. :)

♥ Top Ten 'Gateway' Books/Authors In My Reading Journey♥

Ugh. I swear I'm trying to do this more. I really am. Maybe when I get internet at home? We'll see. As it is, I'll just come and go as I please. :)

I'm not really sure how to answer this one. I don't think there were really any (or at least many) books/authors that really got me into reading. I honestly don't recall a time I didn't enjoy reading. I was never a struggling reader and I always enjoyed getting lost in stories.

Some of the ones I remember from grade school that kept me going:

I know these are super sad stories, and I haven't read any as an adult (although I still have all the ones I owned from back then on my top shelf)... but, man, I devoured these.

Creepy and exciting. Definitely kept me turning pages.

Sweet Pickles Series

These, I've discovered, are not widely remembered, but I loved collecting them.

The Ghost of Windy Hill by Clyde Robert Bulla

I used to get in trouble for staying up and reading this one with a flashlight. Mysteriously, said flashlight disappeared from my room. Hmmm....

In high school, I couldn't get enough of:

I loved going on these thrilling and mysterious rides. I can never thank my friend, Rachel, enough for introducing him to me.

Before she became a phenomenon due to The Vampire Diaries, LJ Smith was already wooing me and many of my friends back in the day. I've never watched the show, but the original Vampire Diaries series is one of my faves of hers... along with The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, and Dark Visions. Somehow I always felt like part of a secret club when reading them. ;)

There was a time when I didn't read *as much* as I have in recent years. College, life, what-have-you. But one summer break from college, I really started compiling a heavy "read" list, which started with:

I loved this story. The way it was written, the characters. I loved it all.

Looking back, I do find this one a little odd. But I did read nearly all of her books to-date (at that time, of course). Eventually I think they started to feel a little *too* heavy on the religious/preachy side for me and I moved on, but I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for books in the contemporary Christian fiction genre.

I discovered her by accident. I was going through my niece's shelves, looking for a book to read. I couldn't find one that caught my attention, but she was reading Vanishing Acts and loving it. So I got it from the library and LOVED it. I've read most, and own most, of her books to-date. :)

I stumbled upon her while I was working on the Mobile Library... and I kinda feel like she's the YA version of Jodi Picoult. Sure, she doesn't get as controversial or deliver some extreme plot twist at the end (at least not in most books), but she does deal with some serious/heavy topics. Anyway. I totally loved the story (Just Listen) and enjoyed her writing. And I continue to, as well. (And, if I really look back, this was probably my main 'gateway' into YA literature...)

Anyway. There's my picks for this week. :)

What's on your list?

Happy Tuesday!

Smiles,
B

I'm Gonna Love It, Hug It, Squeeze It, and Call it George {A Top Ten Tuesday Post}

I've been in and out here recently. Every time I think I'm going to post more often; weekly, twice a week, daily... life just seems to get in the way. Lack of internet at home, daughter having surgery, my own personal issues, kitchen remodel, keeping busy at work... the first thing to go is always the blog. Which, in the grand scheme of things, makes total sense. I mean, in reality, it's the least important thing. But I love doing it. So...  yeah. I'm just going to keep on tryin'. :)

Because I love doing the Top 10 Tuesday Meme... Here we go!

  ♥ Top Ten Books I Read in 2013 ♥

Since, as I've said, I've been flitting, it seems fitting that today's Top Ten was a Rewind - choose one you've missed or would like to re-do! :) So I chose this one. Due to my inability to be consistent, some of these may link to reviews and some may not. I thought about doing on about the books I *didn't* love, but then thought I'd rather rave than rant. :)

This week's choice:

The Moon and More

"From what I could see, the hardwood was just fine. Then again, I'd just see a windmill and an open sky, too, never feeling the need to conquer either. You think it's all obvious and straightforward, this world. But really, it's all in who is doing the looking."

~The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

So very, very true.

Recommended Reads {A Top Ten Tuesday Post}

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a Top Ten topic for you to create your list, then you share it on their post so others can find you. :)

♥ Top Ten Books I Would Recommend To... ♥

I have no problem recommending books... sort of. I mean, I will recommend stuff all the time, to Malissa, Mindy, Danielle... but there's always the nagging thought...

What if... what if I feel:

  And then they feel:

Yes, I realize that it's better if we all have varied opinions, that what works for one may not work with another. But, and I know you feel me here, when it's something we absolutely loved, that touched us on some deeper level, we want that person we're recommending it to to grasp the awesomeness that is that book as well. Right? But, alas, that doesn't always happen. Such is life. Plus, it'd be pretty damn boring if we all liked the same stuff, right?

All that being said, to my sister-in-law (one of the slowest readers I've ever met, so the book has to be quick/easy to get into...) I would recommend the following:

Code Name Verity   The Scorpio Races   Eleanor & Park   Out of the Easy
Dash & Lily's Book of Dares   The Fault in Our Stars
The Space Between   The Moon and More   Splintered (Splintered, #1)   Second Glance

I've loved each of these at one time or another. And definitely could see (or maybe just hope) that Michelle would love them just as much. :)

What books would you recommend? To anyone specific?

Smiles,
B

This week's choice:

The Moon and More

"Everything had started in such sharp detail, each aspect pronounced and clear. Obviously, endings were different. Harder to see, full of shapes that could be one thing or another, with all the things that you were once so sure of suddenly not familiar, if they were even recognizable at all."

~Sarah Dessen, The Moon and More

Sarah Dessen is so quotable. ;) I love this one. It definitely speaks the truth. Things get so muddled at the endings of things, especially if the ending is bad. The clarity is lost, nothing will ever be or feel the same.

Anything strike you lately?

WWW Wednesday ♥

WWW Wednesdays was started by MizB over at Should Be Reading,

To play along, simply answer the following three (3) Questions:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you'll read next?

What I'm Currently Reading

The Moon and More

After finishing Unhinged it took me a couple of days before I was ready to dive into another book. I decided to go contemporary this time, and Sarah Dessen is one of my favorites. :)  So far I'm really enjoying it.

What I Recently Finished

Unhinged (Splintered, #2)   The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)   Lola and the Boy Next Door (Anna and the French Kiss, #2)

This Is What Happy Looks Like   Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock

Oh. My. Goodness. I bow down to AG Howard. For real. Unhinged (number two in the Splintered series) is A-MAY-ZING. I love the world she has created. Despite all the tension, the horrible things that happen, I want to live there. I want to join Alyssa, Jeb, Morpheus... despite the consequences. ;)
I really enjoyed the story and writing of Lola and the Boy Next Door.
This is What Happy Looks Like is such a cute story.
While I was intrigued by The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, I found myself simply not caring what happens next in the story.
And Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock fell flat for me, unfortunately. I know a lot of people have loved it.

What I Might Read Next

The Moth in the Mirror (Splintered, #1.5)   Allegiant (Divergent, #3)

Fangirl

Of course it may end up not being any of these, but... I'm excited to read more about the Splintered world in The Moth in the Mirror. And it's even more appealing that it's told from Morpheus and Jeb's point of view. :)  And it shouldn't surprise anyone that I'm wanting to finish the Divergent trilogy. I've stayed away from reviews/spoilers/mentions, but a friend of mine told me there was controversy over the ending. I'm pretty nervous to start this one. Fangirl... well, I loved Eleanor & Park so I look forward to reading anything by Rainbow Rowell.

What do you think I should read next? What have you been reading?

Currently Reading

I started this one at lunch and so far I think I'm going to really enjoy it. I love the writing and I'm feeling pretty attached to Juliette already.

Recently Finished

Once Was Lost  17 & Gone
Another Little Piece  Girl of Nightmares (Anna, #2)
Of the four pictured, I liked Girl of Nightmares best. :) Another Little Piece (review) was really disjointed to me and I'm still confused over things. 17 & Gone was mostly good. Once Was Lost was okay, but I wanted more. Reviews to come.

What I Might Read Next

Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss, #1)  The Moon and More  Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)
So I'm really not sure what I'll be in the mood for next. Depending on the end of Shatter Me, I may move straight on to Unravel Me. Anna and the French Kiss and The Moon and More are both on my shelves as well. So we'll see what strikes me. :)
