Memories... Light the Corner of my Mind

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a Top Ten topic for you to create your list, then you share it on their post so others can find you. :)

Top Ten Bookish Memories
♥ In the order in which they happened ♥

  1. The Ghost of Windy Hill by Clyde Robert Bulla
This book got me in SO much trouble when I was a kid. I would stay up reading it and rereading it with a flashlight under my covers. Eventually the flashlight got taken away from me. Apparently I wasn't easy to get up in the mornings on a good day, but it was even worse when I stayed up late reading. :)

  2. Email response from Jodi Picoult
I discovered Jodi Picoult's books about nine-ish years ago and fell in love with them. I devoured them one by one until there was nothing left but broken pieces of my soul. As I was stalking her website one day trying to decide which book to read next (of the ones I hadn't read) I noticed that you could email her and she claimed she would email you back - and that it would be her, not someone else. I had never before sent 'fan mail' to anyone, but I decided I'd go for it and see what happened. And what happened? She responded! I nearly died of excitement... for real.

  3. Signed t-shirt from Jodi Picoult
Another Jodi moment here. Again, stalkerish as I was, I noticed on her website that if you donated some money to a cause she was supporting she would send you a signed Tenth Circle t-shirt. This was back before marriage, before kids, before a mortgage and endless mountain of bills coming in the mail, so I donated. And got something extremely fun in the mail instead. Although in hindsight it's not exactly the greatest item to have signed. I don't want to wear it and I don't exactly have a place to display it, so it's been hanging out in my closet for like seven years. But still. Pretty awesome to have. :)

  4. Meeting and talking with Mike Mullin and getting my copy of Ashfall signed
I was at a library conference (CYPD ~ Children's & Young People Division of the Indiana Library Federation). Every year at these conferences there's a booth for Kid's Ink Bookstore, which is run by Shirley Mullin, Mike Mullin's mom. Mike convinced his publisher, Tanglewood, to let him sell a limited number of finished copies pre-release date at the conference via his mom's store. I was lucky enough to be there, buy one, and get it signed. It was great to meet a new author and I was really excited about reading the book. Thank goodness. I would have felt bad if I didn't even like the premise and he was standing right there. lol

  5. Tweet back from Maggie Stiefvater
I was skimming Twitter, as I'm known to do, and Maggie had tweeted a picture of something, I don't even remember what now. Whatever amazingness she wrote made me want to see the picture, so I clicked on her tweet which, as I'm sure you know, took me to her Twitter profile page. I had finished reading The Scorpio Races sometime in the near past and was SO SO SO excited about her background - it was text from The Scorpio Races. Being that it's one of my favorite books, I tweeted her that I loved her background. She. Tweeted. Me. Back. Never did I expect a response from her, let alone a quick response. I was flabbergasted. She said she had just changed it, so I responded that I felt stalkerish and she responded... again. I only favorited that one so I didn't seem too over-the-top in my stalking. Hopefully I only stalk in a non-creepy way. ;)

  6. Meeting E Lockhart and getting my copy of The Disreputable History of Frankie Laundau-Banks signed
This was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I loved Frankie and the story. When I went to the latest ILF (Indiana Library Federation) conference this past fall, I was super excited to see that E. Lockhart would be there (with the aforementioned Kids Ink Bookstore), signing. So I bought myself a copy and had her sign it. Definitely made for a great day.

  7. Getting a signed bookplate in the mail from Maggie Stiefvater
Back in November 2012, Maggie posted on her blog that she would be giving away signed bookplates featuring some art that she did for The Raven Boys. Now, as you already know, I love Maggie's writing and I loved The Raven Boys (and am super excited that she announced on Twitter she will be revealing the title of the second book in the Raven Cycle series and the cover!) so I was all over this. All I had to do was take a picture of myself with my copy The Raven Boys and either post it somewhere for her or mail it to her and she would sign a bookplate and send it back to me. Easy peasy, right? Well, not only do I love to read, I love to take pictures as well. So I went a little overboard. I took a picture with each of my kids holding her book and ended up creating an entire blog post about it (you can see it here). I mailed her the pictures with a link to the blog post and waited. And waited... and waited. FINALLY, it came. I jumped for joy and took a picture of it and sent it to my friends and posted it to Twitter... I was that excited. My husband, of course, couldn't understand my excitement until I compared it to sports (I hate that I just stereotyped him... lol), but then he understood and semi-shared in my joy. :)  I still haven't put it in my book, though. I have been on the fence on that for one reason: the dust jacket has a slight tear on the corner (still have no clue how that happened... I swear it was intact when I put it on the shelf after buying it) and I can't decide if I want to put it in that one or buy a new one (eventually) and put it in that one. Decisions, decisions.
I'm stopping at 7 this week.I figure if I have to think harder to come up with more then maybe they shouldn't go in my Top Ten. lol

Any bookish memories you'd like to share?

Smiles,
B

  1. I should have added some twitter memories! I remember totally freaking out when an author followed me back for the first time, or retweeted my tweet or answered it! Bookish memories are the best!

  2. I can relate! Getting an email response from a favorite author is such an incredible delight... and I had pretty much the same reaction as you the first time an author responded to one of my tweets! Little things really mean a lot. Nice list!

  3. I love it when authors tweet you back! It's like, OMG you're human and not a writing god. It's awesome.

    1. It is awesome... sometimes without meaning to you get this idea in your head that all they do is write books. It's great when they interact with you. :)

      Thanks for stopping by!
