He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a Top Ten topic for you to create your list, then you share it on their post so others can find you. :)

♥ Top Ten Characters I Would Crush On...

If I Were Also a Fictional Character ♥

Okay, I admit it. I fall in and out of love a lot. Seriously. But, in my defense, if the authors weren't so damn good at creating amazing stories and characters, that wouldn't happen. Just sayin'.

Oh, Sean Kendrick. How I loved your determination, your brokenness, your unconditional love for Corr... and how you were willing to throw it all away for Puck.

Augustus Waters... how you broke my heart in The Fault in the Stars. Not true. You shattered it into a million tiny pieces. You make me love you with your optimism, your honesty, your quirks, and then you leave me. Your spirit was contagious and will live on for years to come.

Peeta. It was always Peeta. It will always be Peeta. I mean, anyone who would give up their bread, risk their own well-being, make me believe in new beginnings? Yeah, my heart would belong to him.

Dash... he played the game. An ultimate risk taker, someone who took a chance on love, completely in the dark.

Ah, Noah Calhoun... anyone who can love like that, so completely, without reservation, would definitely have my heart, no matter how often we end up yelling at one another.

Gansey. I can't help but love him. He's so dedicated to what he wants, what he believes, that he'll just keep pushing and pushing. Never giving up. There's something about him that's so... intriguing.

Tracks me down after I send him a million mixed signals and leave him? Spends the entire night with me despite it all? Yeah, I'll take that.

Henry... a love that transcends time? Someone that dedicated could definitely win my heart.

Jeb, someone who would follow me down the rabbit hole, no questions asked?  Or would it be the mysterious, broken one? Nope. I'd go with the one that falls with me.

Alex... Alex... Alex. (I haven't read Requiem yet, so this is based entirely on this first book.)  Any guy who could get me to fall in love despite it being a 'disease', who would teach me what it means to feel, who helps me escape not only the controlling arm of society but the constraints I set on myself... yeah. My heart's his.

I imagine I could go one, but I will actually stop at ten this week. I could give some honorable mentions, and I even had them, but I'm good with this one.

What about you? Who are your book boyfriends?

Review ♫ Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist ♪

Nick & Norah's Infinite PlaylistTitle:  Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
Author:  Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
Publisher:  Knopf Books for Young Readers
Publication Date:  May 2006
Source:  Purchased, Own
Format:  Hardcover
Rating:  4 stars

~ Goodreads Synopsis ~

It all starts when Nick asks Norah to be his girlfriend for five minutes. He only needs five minutes to avoid his ex-girlfriend, who’s just walked in to his band’s show. With a new guy. And then, with one kiss, Nick and Norah are off on an adventure set against the backdrop of New York City—and smack in the middle of all the joy, anxiety, confusion, and excitement of a first date.

This he said/she said romance told by YA stars Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is a sexy, funny roller coaster of a story about one date over one very long night, with two teenagers, both recovering from broken hearts, who are just trying to figure out who they want to be—and where the next great band is playing.

Told in alternating chapters, teeming with music references, humor, angst, and endearing side characters, this is a love story you’ll wish were your very own. Working together for the first time, Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have combined forces to create a book that is sure to grab readers of all ages and never let them go.

It's a damn darn good thing this is a great story. If it weren't for that, the language would have driven me away. I'm not against cursing by any means. In fact, I tend to use it more often than I should. So my theory with a book is this: If the profanity is enough to distract me, then it's probably a bit gratuitous. I would expect some, given the setting and all the punk rock references, but I did feel some of it was more for shock value than adding to the story.

Although it was a good story. At first it floundered a bit for me, as I tried to grasp onto the characters and get to know them a bit. They sort of just jumped into it. But I think the first person perspective works really well in this case. I was able to dive into their minds a bit, which helped develop them as people for me. I loved the fear of relationships; hell, even as adults we get that. But especially as teenagers, who isn't afraid of letting yourself go and let someone get to know you. The real you. Not the one you present everywhere.

It's funny. Really funny at times. It's insightful and thought provoking. The characters felt real to me, and I loved that. It's not about what is going on so much as it is about their growth. And sure, it may not take place over a year, or even a month; it's a one-night story. But it's a night of change, epiphanies, finding yourself, letting go, and having fun.

♪ Nick ♪

"If I don't shut down my brain soon, my imagination will take off so far about what could be with this guy, that nothing will ever be able to just be."
♪ Norah ♪

In the end, I did give it a higher rating than I might have due to the fact that I really enjoyed the story itself. Could some of the language been removed/replaced? Sure. Did I get past it? Yeah. Would I recommend this to a younger teen? Probably not, unless I knew them or their parents quite well.

I haven't seen the movie, which is strange since I remember wanting to watch it but then I found out it was a book. Now that I've read the book I'll watch the movie. And given that I know Kat Dennings plays Norah, I really think Rachel Cohn wrote that part with her mind. ;)

Have you read it? What did you think? If not, do you think you'll read it?
